MARGAO
Ahead of a planned move to join the Congress party, Yuri Alemao has resigned from the primary membership of the Goa Forward party as well as from the post, duties and responsibilities assigned to him by the party leadership.
The Goa Forward party was quick to dissolve the Cuncolim constituency party block with immediate effect, with party Joint Secretary Santosh Kumar Sawant saying the new committee would be decided soon.
In his resignation letter, Yuri expressed his inability to continue further in the party due to personal reasons and thanked Goa Forward party chief Vijai Sardesai and the party for all the valuable guidance and support time and again.
Yuri told The Goan after quitting the party that he has taken the decision as per the wishes of the supporters in Cuncolim constituency.
Sources in the know informed that Yuri has chalked out plans to embrace the Congress party and position himself to stake claim for the party ticket to contest from Cuncolim on the party banner.
That Yuri had moved away from the Goa Forward party had become evident during the campaign for the Zilla Panchayat election for the Guirdolim seat, which is part of Cuncolim constituency. Yuri and his supporters had virtually taken over the election campaign of Congress candidate Sonia Fernandes.
Recently, Yuri had his supporters agitate against the double-tracking and coal transportation projects at Chandor along with Congress workers and leaders led by Leader of the Opposition, Digambar Kamat, sending indications that it will be just a matter of time before he quits the Goa Forward party and joins the Congress.
Meanwhile, Goa Forward Joint Secretary Santosh Kumar Sawant said the party has accepted the resignation of Yuri Alemao. Sawant, however, said that the question of Yuri resigning from the post does not arise as he was never given any position or post in the party. “We have thousands of primary members in the party across Goa and Yuri was one of them. Party will soon announce the new Cuncolim Block Committee which will work towards taking Cuncolim forward,” Sawant added.
