Stating that Zilla Panchayat elections in the State are likely to be held by mid-December, Urban Development Minister Milind Naik on Tuesday said hard-working candidates who have worked for the people need not worry about reservations ahead of the municipal elections.
Naik was speaking to reporters along the sidelines of a function to launch the work for a new sewerage line at Baina in the presence of outgoing ward councillor Leo Rodrigues.
"The ZP elections will be conducted first, followed by municipal elections in Goa. The dates have not been fixed but the ZP polls will be held in mid-December and on a Saturday-Sunday slot.”
“The period in mid-December is considered because we have the Old Goa feast on December 3 and later, we have the Christmas festival. The municipal elections dates will not be announced before ZP elections," said Naik.
"As far as reservations of wards are concerned, it will be done as per legal procedures. Some people are more worried about the reservation of wards, but hard-working candidates who have performed and worked for the people need not worry about reservations as they can win with or without reservations.”
“There is no sense in people waiting for reservations to happen to prove their candidature to people in the ward and a person who works for the people will always win. A social worker must never think of all such things if he or she wants to work for the people and become their leader," said Naik.
Naik said the Rs 18 lakh sewerage project in Baina was a long-pending demand and the work would be completed in 90 days.
"A sewerage system should be made available to all and this is one reason we took up this project under Swaccha Bharat through the PWD sewerage department. We will put a new line because there was no existing sewerage line and this new sewerage line running over 250 metres can provide more connections to residents," said Naik.
Outgoing councillor Leo Rodrigues also spoke at the occasion.
