Day one of the process of filing of nomination papers for the nine Zilla Panchayat seats in Salcete taluka went without a single candidate filing their nomination papers on Thursday.
The election authorities, including the two Returning Officers appointed by the State Election Commission, Vishal Kundaikar and Shankar Gaonkar, along with the police have all geared up for the election exercise.
Of the nine ZP seats in Salcete taluka, as many as five seats, including the seats of Velim, Benaulim Colva, Nuvem and Raia will be handled by Returning Officer-I Vishal Kundaikar. Returning Officer-II Shankar Gaonkar has been designated by the SEC to look after the remaining four ZP seats of Navelim, Guirdolim, Davorlim and Curtorim.
While the Returning Officers were holed up in their respective chambers with the election staff on Day one of the filing of nomination papers, a posse of policemen were posted outside their chambers.
Election officials informed that they expect the candidates to come in large numbers beginning from Monday as most of the political parties haven’t still finalized their candidates to contest the coming polls.
