The BJP has banked on party grass-root leader and sitting Davorlim Zilla Panchayat leader Ulhas Tuemkar to lead the party’s campaign in minority Salcete, even as the Congress has shortlisted as many as five candidates to wrest the Davorlim seat from the BJP this time round.
The BJP Davorlim ZP member had kept the BJP flag flying high in Salcete in the 2015 Zilla Panchayat polls, and the party has cleared his candidature in the first list of candidates released by the party on Thursday. “I am happy that the party has cleared by candidature in the first list of candidates. During my five year stint representing Davorlim, I had taken up a number of developmental works in my constituency,” he said.
A grassroot player, Tuemkar had been a former sarpanch of Rumdamol-Davorlim and three-time panchayat member, before being elected to the South Goa Zilla panchayat from Davorlim. “I am confident that my development work in the constituency will keep me in good stead in the coming polls,” he added.
On the other hand, the Congress party was still in the process of shortlisting party candidates to take on the sitting member and wrest the seat from the BJP.
Sources in the know say the Navelim Block Congress committee is believed to have suggested as many as five names for consideration of the party leadership for finalizing of the party candidate for Davorlim.
It is learnt that the names of Murtuz K, Sahar Sarfaraz Shaik, Shaikh Abdul Kadir, Rajana Raikar and Paulo Pedro Colaco figured in the list of candidates suggested by the Navelim block committee to the South Goa district committee on Thursday.
