On the eve of the crucial joint meeting of the GPCC and CLP to decide whether the Congress should contest the March 22 Zilla Panchayat, reports emanating from the Congress do not rule out the possibility of the party leadership deciding in favour of contesting the ensuing polls on the party banner.
Sources in the know said CLP leader and Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, who had announced the CLP decision against contesting the ZP polls on party lines, is believed to have told many a party leader in various constituencies to shortlist probable candidates to contest the polls on the party banner.
Sources informed that in places, which are not being represented by the Congress party, inputs have been sought from local leaders on the coming election. The local leaders have been asked to shortlist candidates to contest the coming polls in the event the joint meeting of the CLP and GPCC takes a decision in favour of contesting the elections on the party symbol.
It is learnt some of the party workers from Salcete have conveyed to the party leadership that the situation is good for the party to win a couple of seats on the Hand symbol given the resentment brewing against the government.
