Calangute MLA Michael Lobo made a case for widening of roads in the State due to rise in vehicular population and the influx of domestic tourists, who come to Goa in their own vehicles.
“Many tourist vehicles coming from Maharashtra and Karnataka via the NH17 take a diversion at the Guirim junction, near Hotel Green Park and then move towards the coastal belt through Parra,” Michael Lobo, Calangute MLA, said.
He also stressed on the need of footpaths for the safety of pedestrians and promised to build a walkway all along the Mapusa to Calangute road.
The MLA was speaking at the launch of hot-mixing of the Parra-Mapusa road on Wednesday.
“The number of vehicles has increased considerably in the State and with large number of domestic tourists also driving down in their own vehicles, there is a need to broaden the existing narrow roads,” Lobo said.
The steady traffic along the roads has made it dangerous for pedestrians, he pointed out and said a footpath was a necessity. “Existing roads do not have footpaths, due to which pedestrians have to walk on the roads,” the Calagute MLA said.
The Mapusa-Calangute road, which is used by a large number of vehicles, will soon have a pedestrian walkway on one side along its entire length, the MLA said.
“Work on footpath will be taken up at a cost of Rs 5 crore, once the road widening and hot-mixing is completed,” Lobo said.
