Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar on Monday claimed his statements on the installation of another religious statue in the beautified Vaddem lake had been misunderstood, adding that an issue was being made out of the statements.
Gaonkar, however, did admit having received proposals for the installation of another religious statue in the beautified Vaddem lake.
Speaking to reporters after a special council meeting on Monday, Gaonkar said: “A lot of people come to me with various proposals and it does not mean that I can take a decision. If I want to take any decision I have to take my council and property owners into confidence. Only after that is done can we come into any conclusion.” “My statements have been misunderstood by the public and an issue is being made out of it. I have never said I am going to install an idol in the beautified lake,” said Gaonkar.
Gaonkar clarified that the ownership of the Vaddem lake belonged to the church and the church had given an NOC to the MMC to beautify the lake.
“It’s an administrative process and beautification works are taken up in the lake only after following a procedure. The council and the property owners can sit together
and decide what is to be done next.”
“However, the public will not be restricted from access to the lake,” assured Gaonkar.
