Minister for Water Resources and Fisheries, Filipe Nery Rodrigues, on Sunday made a fervent plea to the people of Goa to cultivate the habit of reading Konkani literature to protect our  mother tongue for posterity.   

 He was speaking after unveiling the plaque naming the Sirlim Chapel road as Fr Antonio Pereira SJ road in commemoration of Fr Antonio Pereira’s birth centenary on Sunday organised by the Tiatr Academy of Goa, Dalgado Konknni Akademi and Fr Freddy J Da Costa Memorial Trust.

 “The Konkani language has survived and will continue to survive in the state in the future. But, the language will be richer if the people read Konkani literature,” Rodrigues said.   

 The Minister urged the young generation to emulate personalities such as Fr Antonino Pereira for his achievements and contributions to Konkani language through his writings. 

“This is the age of technology. But, we have to live with the values of a great man like Fr Antonio,”  he said.   

 While praying to the almighty to give wisdom to provide a people-friendly government to the people, the minister said people’s expectations and needs have increased over the years and they look for immediate solutions.   

 The function was attended by Dalgado Konknni Akademi president Tomazinho Cardozo, vice-president Fr Conceicao Da Silva, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Hope Church, Chinchinim Fr Jose A Costa, Chaplain of Our Lady of Merces Chapel, Sirlim Fr Menino Vales, Dramapur-Sirlim Sarpanch Sanjana Chari, ZP member Cipru Cardozo and others.
