‘Sandy’ terrain causes hardships to commuters at Keri wharf

Commuters travelling from Tiracol towards Keri through the ferry boats have to face a lot of hardships due to accumulation of sand in front of the ferry wharf at Keri.

As sand is accumulated some metres away from the ferry wharf at Keri for last the 15 days, it is becoming difficult for the ferry boats to reach towards the wharf and have to dock on the sand dunes.
The vehicles using the ferry service have to struggle to wend its way through the sand to reach the road. Sometimes, vehicles get stuck in the sand and later the ferry staff have to intervene to remove the stuck vehicles.
The government is yet to take any measures to solve the problem. The people travelling from Tiracol towards Keri and vice-versa take a long route from the Aronda-Kiranpani bridge to avoid this haphazard ferry route.
Speaking to reporters, social worker, Narayan Kerkar said sand got accumulated on the ferry wharf for the last many years and people are inconvenienced while moving their vehicles from the ferry boat.“The main reason for sand accumulation is sand extraction, which is done a few metres away from wharf. Sand extraction
is taking place at a large extent, due to which there is formation of low pressure belt and the sand gets accumulated on the coast,” he added.
Former Keri-Tiracol sarpanch Francis Rodrigues said no governments have sympathised with the residents of Tiracol.
“The government has not yet succeeded in building a small bridge for the Tiracol residents and has left Tiracol bridge worth Rs 75 crore half completed,” he said.
