Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas brought to light a critical issue affecting the state's education system during the Zero Hour of the Goa Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Addressing the assembly, Viegas highlighted the severe shortage of teachers in schools across Goa, which has reached alarming levels and is now impacting the quality of education for students.
“Almost all our schools in the state are struggling with a severe shortage of teachers, resulting in a student-teacher ratio that is far from ideal. This has led to a significant decline in the quality of education, leaving our children without necessary guidance and support,” Viegas stated passionately.
The MLA also drew attention to the dire conditions faced by contractual teachers, who he described as being overworked, underpaid, and deprived of essential job security and benefits.
Viegas emphasised that the exploitation of these teachers has reached crisis proportions, causing further disruption to the already fragile education system.
“The plight of contractual teachers is deplorable. They are overworked, underpaid, and denied the benefits and job security that they deserve. This is causing a disruption to the education system,” he remarked.
Viegas called for urgent intervention from the government to address these pressing issues. He urged for the immediate filling of vacant teaching posts and the regularisation of services for contractual teachers.
Additionally, he stressed the need for providing these educators with the necessary resources and support to perform their duties effectively.
“We need to fill the vacant teaching posts, regularise the services of contractual teachers, and provide them with the necessary resources and support,” he said.
Viegas concluded his address with a powerful appeal, highlighting the broader implications of the current situation on future generations. He underscored the importance of ensuring that children receive quality education and that teachers are treated with dignity and respect.
“Our children deserve quality education, and our teachers deserve dignity and respect. Let us work together to ensure that our education system is strengthened and our future generations empowered,” he added, urging the government to take immediate action.
