After delay, govt to complete NIWS campus next month

PANAJI

Despite nearly a decade-long delay caused by various reasons including the pandemic, the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) campus at Caranzalem is set to be completed by May. According to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the institute will not suffer further delay.

“The project had been delayed for various reasons either due to the consultant, contractor or pandemic, coordination between the central agency and the GSIDC over approvals, etc. Nevertheless, we will complete the project by May and hand it over so that the training and courses are undertaken unhindered,” he said after inspecting the ongoing works on Monday.

The CM expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the work adding that the institute will also offer BBA, MBA and PhD courses in Tourism and other operations.

The NIWS is an apex body for licensing leisure water sports in the country and trains water sports operators through various skill-developing courses, and short-term certificate courses and certifies the trainees. The institute has been instrumental in training over 2,500 students every year.

During the visit, CM also interacted with the officials working on the project after which he inspected the protection and restoration work being done on the Mandovi coastline. “We appreciated the efforts of the officials and workers involved in the project. The work of this project is being carried out with utmost care and precision, and the progress of the project is being monitored regularly,” he added.

The NIWS will play a significant role in the development of the water sports industry in the country and create employment opportunities whilst also promoting tourism. With the addition of professional studies in this sector, the institute will be well-equipped to provide comprehensive training to those interested in pursuing a career in the water sports industry.
