Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday announced that the Goa government will soon launch a Bachelor’s programme in Fisheries Science at Goa University while citing this sector's potential amidst the growing ‘Blue Economy.’
Speaking at the Flag Off ceremony of the Aqua Goa Mega Fish Festival 2023-24 scheduled next month, the CM further stated the need to encourage students to consider fisheries as a viable career option.
“We have already introduced Agriculture Science, and soon Veterinary Science will follow suit. In the long run, we intend to introduce Fisheries Science... It will provide students with the opportunity to learn skills in the export of fish, processing and various segments of the fisheries sector… It is one of the best options to take up after Class 12th,” he said.
Sawant further expressed the desire to provide students with the opportunity to benefit from the expanding Blue Economy in the country.
“Now, fisheries have become a profitable industry also after the introduction of advanced technology…. Goan students will benefit from this programme... They will find success in India and across the world,” he added. Currently, three seats for BSc in Fisheries are reserved at Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapith in Dapoli, Maharashtra.
The CM also revealed that the import and export business from Goa amounts to Rs 1,000 crore annually.
Meanwhile, the Bachelor’s programme in Veterinary Science will commence in the upcoming academic year at Goa University.
