The Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) authorities have started a drive to recover Rs 5 crore which is pending in the form of house tax, shop and office rent.BMC Chief Officer Sachin Desai said the council has served notices to shop and office vendors and house owners who are yet to clear their dues.
“There are about 330 shops, offices and kiosks in the old, new market area and town centre building. Some shop owners have failed to renew their licenses while some have not paid their rent on regular basis. As a result, it becomes extremely difficult for the BMC to generate revenue,” said Desai.
“If shop owners fail to pay the rent arrears despite sending notices, we will seal their shops,” warned the chief officer, while appealing to shop owners to pay the rent as early as possible.
Desai said a huge amount is also pending from the industrial estate and added that the BMC has started correspondence to the industrial estate owners to pay the pending taxes.
BMC Chairperson Kundan Falari said a strict recovery drive has been started to recover all dues.
“The BMC is undertaking new development works from the grant of Rs 3.5 crore which has been sanctioned from the government,” said Falari.
