The Calangute Panchayat has unveiled plans for a major joint venture (JV) with Tata Trent, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, to construct a high-end market complex and bus stand in the bustling beach village.
The proposed project, estimated to cost around Rs 275 crore, will be developed on a 35,000 square metre plot opposite the petrol pump at Bodkovad. The ambitious development will not only feature a modern market complex and a bus stand, but also include key civic facilities like a panchayat ghar, offices for the electricity and health departments, a community centre, and various showrooms.
If approved, the project is expected to be completed within two years. Speaking on the project, Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira emphasised the panchayat’s commitment to providing essential services to the community.
“Our primary responsibility is to serve the people and this project is aimed at doing just that,” Sequeira stated. He added that the panchayat will consult with local property owners and present the proposal before the gram sabha to gauge the villagers’ response.
Sequeira noted that the project could help ease congestion in Calangute village, as the market's location on the village's periphery would allow residents from neighbouring villages like Candolim and Arpora to shop and travel without entering the congested heart of Calangute.
The panchayat has already given its initial approval, but the project’s future depends on community support. “If the people of Calangute are in favour, we will move ahead; if not, we will reconsider,” said Sequeira.
The project is expected to generate revenue for the panchayat, as no local funds will be required for construction.
The idea of a market complex has been in the works since 2004, but financial constraints had previously stalled the project. Sequeira explained that the panchayat faced difficulties acquiring land and lacked the resources to move forward.
"Twenty years ago, the plans were prepared and submitted to various departments, but the lack of finances kept us from proceeding," Sequeira added.
Now, with the involvement of Tata Trent, the panchayat hopes to finally bring this long-awaited project to fruition.
