Calangute sarpanch decries PWD’s failure on road works

MAPUSA

In a sharp critique of the Public Works Department (PWD), Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira has accused the department’s engineers of failing to properly execute road and drainage works in the village.

Sequeira highlighted the efforts of the Calangute panchayat in addressing these issues independently, often using its own funds to repair roads and drainage systems.

The sarpanch on Tuesday expressed frustration over the quality of work carried out by the PWD in Calangute, one of Goa's most popular tourist destinations.

According to him, the engineers responsible for the area have neglected their duties, leading to significant problems, especially during the monsoon season.

“The PWD engineers in charge of Calangute have failed to execute proper road works in several areas. As a result, water accumulates in various spots during the rains due to poor road engineering and substandard hotmixing work,” Sequeira said.

He pointed out that the Calangute panchayat has had to step in repeatedly to resolve these issues.

"We have amicably resolved several complex problems in the village, carrying out road repairs and drainage works through our own funds," Sequeira added, emphasising the proactive role of the panchayat in maintaining infrastructure.

One of the most glaring examples of the PWD’s shortcomings is the road in front of St Alex Church, where a large pothole has developed.

During heavy rains, this pothole becomes a significant hazard as rainwater accumulates on the main road due to a faulty drainage system.

The sarpanch did not mince words in placing the blame squarely on the PWD engineers, whom he holds responsible for the deteriorating road conditions.

Sequeira has sought an appointment with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to discuss the ongoing issues in Calangute. He expressed confidence that the Chief Minister would address these concerns and find a solution to the problems plaguing the village.

“The residents of Calangute have high hopes that our CM will resolve the issues facing us,” Sequeira stated, underlining the community’s reliance on the state government for intervention and support.

The Sarpanch’s remarks have drawn attention to the need for better coordination and accountability within government departments to ensure that essential public works are carried out to standard, particularly in areas that attract both locals and tourists alike.
