Officials of the Corporation of the City of Panaji have been struggling to identify a space in the market complex to provide temporary stalls to meat traders whose shops were sealed in the old, dilapidated market building it had categorised as 'unsafe' and intends to demolish.
"We have not yet set the timeline for when the building will be demolished to pave the way for commencement of work on Phase 3 of the new CCP market," a senior official said.
The capital city has been without a meat (mutton and beef) market for more than a week since CCP sealed the nearly one dozen shops of the meat traders on the ground floor of the old building adjacent to the fish market.
Consequently, the capital city has been hit by an acute shortage or unavailability of fresh meat and consumers of mutton and beef are left with very few options to buy their supplies from in standalone cold storage shops in the city and at malls.
The meat stall located near the old Patto bridge is the only option now for Panjimites to get their supplies of fresh mutton and beef.
Meanwhile, the CCP official told 'The Goan' that the Corporation will come up with some temporary arrangement for the meat traders soon. He said he expected a decision which involves setting up temporary stalls for the meat traders to be taken by the council before the end of this month. He said this temporary arrangement will most likely be made in one or the other vacant areas in the market or thereabouts.
