Concerns over proposed project near heritage site at Old Goa

MAPUSA

The proposed construction of a project near the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Old Goa, has sparked concerns among citizens and heritage conservationists across the State.

Many fear that the project could compromise the sanctity and historical significance of the revered site, with allegations that the government is prioritising development over heritage preservation.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa questioned the government’s stance on the matter.

He pointed out that construction is prohibited within 100 metres of a heritage site, yet the proposed project appears to be moving forward despite these restrictions.

“The people of Goa are deeply concerned that the government is failing to safeguard our heritage sites in the name of development,” D’Costa said, urging authorities to take immediate action to halt the project.

He further called on the government to clarify what steps it intends to take to ensure the preservation of the identity and sanctity of the Basilica of Bom Jesus.

The issue has sparked widespread public outcry, with heritage activists and locals demanding strict enforcement of heritage protection laws to prevent any construction that could undermine the historical significance of Old Goa.

Responding to the concern raised by the MLA, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte stated that the issue will be addressed during the Calling Attention motion on Tuesday, where he will provide a detailed response on the matter.
