Cong MLA voices concern over vigilantism

MAPUSA
Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira has expressed growing concern over the rise of vigilantism in Goa, particularly in relation to the harassment of beef traders by vigilante groups.

Ferreira has assured the traders of his support, even in legal battles, to protect their rights against these groups.

“We must adhere to the law, whether it pertains to beef traders or any other group,” Ferreira said, emphasising the importance of legal protections for all citizens.

Ferreira condemned the actions of vigilante groups, which he said were increasingly engaging in unlawful activities.

"These mobs, operating under the guise of vigilantism, are entering private homes and inspecting fridges and cupboards to check what is stored. This is clearly trespassing,” he said.

He further criticised the groups for now targeting shops to inspect what is being sold. “There is no legal authority vested in these vigilantes to carry out such inspections. This is a direct violation of the law,” Ferreira stated.

The MLA highlighted that such actions not only obstruct legal business operations but also contribute to rising communal tensions across the State. "This behaviour is unacceptable and is dividing the peaceful fabric of our State," Ferreira concluded.
