PANAJI
While Congress candidates for Lok Sabha elections are yet to be finalised, the Opposition party has claimed that two BJP leaders withdrawing interest for the South Goa seat indicated the party will lose the polls.
“Both senior MLAs, one is Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar and the other is former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, are not interested in contesting the South Goa seat because they know that BJP will again lose this seat. BJP is rattled; they are not getting a good candidate, who can fight against our candidate,” GPCC President Amit Patkar said at a press conference held in Panaji.
His statement comes at a time when the Congress is yet to finalise candidates for both Lok Sabha seats while the first list released on Friday, did not have a mention of Goa.
Patkar clarified that Congress has a candidate and the names will be announced soon after the process is completed. “Since 2019, BJP claims they will win the South Goa seat in 2024. It is surprising that they are unable to find a candidate for the last five years,” he added.
Claiming that the BJP believes in ‘use and throw’ policy, Patkar went on to add that the ruling party used defectors, finishing their political career.
Meanwhile, the party promised to fill 30 lakh permanent government jobs for youth across the country if Congress is voted to power in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. However, there is no Goa-centric promise made yet.
“In the second leg of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Rajasthan, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi promised 30 lakh permanent government jobs for youth upon reaching the tribal-dominated Banswara region. Our party is committed to helping our unemployed youths by filling the vacant posts in various departments of government, which BJP has failed. There are 10 lakh sanctioned posts that are vacant in Central Ministries and Departments,” Patkar said.
