The Mapusa market was flooded in many places after three pipelines ruptured on Saturday morning, causing severe hardships to the traders and customers.

The main water pipeline ruptured in front of the Sadananda Cold Drink shop in the market, while two other pipelines near the Shantadurga Hotel and Paradise Pharmacy were also damaged.

As drains in the market were clogged with garbage, water from all the ruptured pipelines accumulated on the road. The areas around the flower market and adjacent places were inundated with water.

As soon as he was made aware of the situation, Mapusa Traders Association President Shripad Sawant rushed to the market. He alerted the PWD office and a team went to the site and shut off the water supply.

Workers then began repairing the three damaged pipelines and completed the work by evening.

What added to the inconvenience was that roads in the market, which had been dug up to lay underground electricity cables, had mud mixed with water making it difficult to move around the place.

Later speaking to reporters, Sawant said flooding had taken place mainly because the drains had been clogged with waste. “If there were to be unseasonal rains, the market would face an even bigger problem than today. Therefore, the Mapusa Municipal Council should immediately clean the drains in the market,” said Sawant.
