The Congress has claimed that organising Shigmo floats only in major cities is not enough and has demanded an official Shigmo parade in Canacona as well.
Submitting a memorandum to the Director of Tourism Menino de Souza, Director of Art & Culture Sagun Velip and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari demanded a Shigmo parade in Canacona for the benefit of local artistes and to preserve the rich tradition and tradition of Canconcars.
Bhandari claimed that Shigmo is celebrated with much enthusiasm in every village of Canacona taluka, with people of all castes and creeds celebrating this festival of colour and festival of joy amid much fanfare.
“There are a number of folk dances which are only performed during Shigmo, like Goff, Tonyo-Mel, Talgadi, Ghodya-Modni, etc. Another important thing is that not only men but women in Canacona are in the forefront to perform such folk dances during Shigmo,” said Bhandari.
He claimed that though Shigmo floats are organised in Margao, Panaji, Mapusa and Ponda, it is not possible for artistes from Canacona to visit these places to showcase their skills, due to various reasons.
“Despite being talented, these artists remain invisible due to lack of exposure. In a way, the government is doing injustice to local artistes by not organising Shigmo floats in Canacona.”
Bhandari said Shigmosthav is still not over and there is still time to celebrate it in Canacona by organising an official Shigmo floats parade.
“Canacona has foreign and domestic tourists and holding the annual Shigmosthav float parade in the taluka will further boost tourism.
Bhandari has also sought the intervention of Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar to organise the Shigmo floats in Canacona.
