Residents of Corlim affected by the road-widening project have unanimously resolved to oppose the project.
The decision was taken at a meeting of locals at Corlim on Saturday. The meeting was held as the public hearing on the objections to road widening is slated on September 22 and 27.
Speaking at the meeting, a local Richard Pereira pointed out that the road-widening project will be detrimental to houses of the locals, even if it is built on stilts. “Even if the highway is built on stilts it will not save the houses from damage,” Pereira informed, while adding that the only option is to oppose the project at any cost.
Pereira further presented an alternate plan where the highway could be diverted from Bhoma, through the fields, to connect the Kadamba plateau.
“This way there will be no need to touch even a single house,” he pointed out and urged all the affected residents to raise their opposition to the road-widening project at the public hearing. “We have to demand that the highway be built through an alternate route,” Pereira said.
Meanwhile, locals have decided to meet North Goa MP Shripad Naik on Monday and submit a memorandum to him so that the MP could raise their issue before the Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
