A court has granted conditional bail to the owner of a two-wheeler and a teenager, in connection with the hit and run accident in Camarkhajan, Mapusa, which claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl.
The judge granted bail to the two-wheeler owner on a bond of Rs 15,000 with a surety of an identical amount.
He has been directed to appear at the police station in the morning for 15 days, not to interfere with the evidence, to be present when required by the court and the investigating officers, not to travel outside the state or country without the permission of the court and other relevant conditions.
The judge granted bail to the teenager on a bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety of an identical amount and with similar conditions.
The incident occurred at around 7.45 pm on May 27, when a 16-year-old boy, allegedly riding a motorcycle without a licence, struck the girl as she was crossing the road. She succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Mapusa.
The pillion rider along with the minor rider fled the scene after the collision without offering any assistance to the victim. The two later attempted to conceal the damaged motorcycle.
The two-wheeler owner was taken into custody for allowing his underage son to operate a two-wheeler without a valid driving licence.
The minor, who has been booked for his role in the incident, will face proceedings before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).
Police have registered a case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, including Sections 281 (rash driving), 125(a) and 125(b) (causing death by negligence and failure to report the incident), 105, 45, and 46. Additionally, Sections 134(a) and 134(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act, which pertain to duties following an accident, have also been invoked.
