DFES prepares 326 volunteers for disaster mgmt, emergencies

The Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services (DFES) has completed the training of 326 volunteers under the touted Aapda Mitra and Aapda Sakhi scheme with a fresh batch passing out this week. 

As per the details shared by Director Nitin Raiker, the 11th batch of 39 volunteers is now among 326 trained individuals, whose services will be sought during emergencies. 

The first batch of training began in April 2022. 

“The volunteers are trained in disaster management, disaster preparedness, earthquake, landslides, nuclear and chemical emergencies, basic search and rescue, floods, tsunami, community-based first aid, CPR, control bleeding, basic fire safety, lifting and moving of patients, rope rescue techniques and improvised techniques,” he said.

The DFES, in 2021, announced commencing the training programmes for community volunteers in disaster response from April 2022 as the government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for implementing the project titled ‘up-scaling of Aapda Mitra Scheme’ to train individuals in rescue and rehabilitation missions.
