The persistent traffic jams at Guirim and surrounding areas, largely due to ongoing construction of the elevated corridor on NH66 at Porvorim, are expected to ease soon, as authorities plan to open alternative road networks to divert traffic.
According to officials, the diversion will alleviate congestion during peak hours by redirecting vehicles to less crowded routes.
Traffic will be rerouted from both Sangolda and Porvorim, following the original plan, which is expected to significantly reduce the current traffic snarls.
"Some vehicles will continue on the existing NH66, while others will be diverted onto the road leading to Socorro Church and beyond," said Jude Carvalho, Executive Engineer, PWD (NH).
Local buses and two-wheelers will still be permitted on the current NH66 route, while heavier vehicles, including those carrying essential goods, will be diverted via Mapusa’s Gandhi Circle, towards Calangute Church, and then to CHOGM road.
Carvalho explained that the delay in implementing the diversions was due to ongoing sewerage work on the Sangolda side.
"We had a meeting with the sewerage department, and they will complete the work in 10 days. Afterward, the road will be hot-mixed, and we can begin diverting traffic," he said.
The Executive Engineer acknowledged the congestion at present, noting that vehicles slow down due to restricted access at the construction site.
However, he assured that within 15 days, the new traffic diversion plan will be implemented, greatly reducing the current jams.
Traffic police and other authorities will oversee the flow of vehicles during the diversion to ensure a smoother travel experience for commuters.
The ongoing work on the 5.15 km six-lane elevated corridor, stretching from Sangolda junction to Hotel Neo Majestic, commenced in mid-April.
The project carries a deadline of 24 months, with an expected completion date set for April 2026.
The elevated corridor is expected to provide much-needed relief to the heavy vehicular movement experienced in the area.
