Just imagine a situation where ESI hospital at Margao is full to its capacity and the South Goa district hospital is almost saturated with around 460 patients as on Thursday, with officials struggling to accommodate growing number of Covid patients.
This situation came to the fore on Thursday when the hospital beds were fully occupied by 190 patients. The six additional beds earmarked for dialysis is also fully saturated.
The situation at the South Goa district hospital was no better. Given the prevailing situation, the officials are believed to have taken a decision to accommodate 15 additional patients in each of the wards on mattresses.
Officials at the district hospital pointed out they have drawn up a plan to increase the bed capacity of the hospital to 500 on priority. Doctors, however, said that increasing the bed capacity alone will not solve the issue without adequate number of manpower, including consultants, medical officers and nurses, besides MTS workers. “Beds cannot treat patients. It’s the manpower that is required in adequate numbers to meet the requirements”, a district hospital official said, adding that the existing manpower deployed at the hospital has been doing their best to give the best medical treatment to the patients.
That the Covid situation in Margao and Salcete’s countryside is turning from bad to worse is evident by the number of walk-in patients at the ESI hospital.
