In a move to combat substance abuse among the young, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) joined forces with the Directorate of Education to host a comprehensive capacity-building programme for 140 nodal teachers and student leaders of anti-drugs clubs (Prahari Clubs) from schools in Mormugao taluka.
Held on January 18 in Vasco, the programme had insightful talks from Dr Rajesh Dhume and Dr Priyanka from the Addiction Treatment Facility as they highlighted the crucial need for proactive measures against substance abuse. Dr Kashyap Bandodkar, a junior resident at GDCH, focused on tobacco control, urging young minds to make healthy choices. Dr Akshatha Gadiyar, an assistant professor at GDCH, shed light on the hidden dangers of e-cigarettes.
Peter F Borges, Chairperson of GSCPCR, emphasized the vital role of Prahari Clubs in fostering a drug-free environment. He championed student engagement and acknowledged the critical responsibility of educators and mentors in safeguarding children from substance abuse. "To make Goa free from drugs," he asserted, "it's crucial to empower our youth with knowledge. They are the leaders in ensuring our state's safety."
Salim Shaikh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vasco, shed light on law enforcement's role in curbing the drug menace. He encouraged active youth participation in supply reduction initiatives, fostering a sense of responsibility and cooperation.
