The Goa Forensic Science Alumni has requested the Secretary, Home Department, Goa, to prioritise MSc Forensic Science graduates for recruitment to recent posts in the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) units.
They pointed out that Goa is privileged to host the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), which produces highly trained and skilled forensic professionals every year. “These graduates undergo rigorous academic and practical training in diverse forensic domains ” such as forensic biology, chemistry, toxicology, ballistics, digital forensics, and crime scene management ” equipping them with the scientific knowledge and hands-on expertise essential for investigative work,” they said.
They added: “In contrast to general MSc graduates, Forensic Science postgraduates are uniquely qualified to handle evidence scientifically, maintain the chain of custody, apply analytical techniques, and interpret findings that assist law enforcement and the judiciary. Their specialised education ensures accuracy, reliability, and efficiency during investigations, both in the laboratory and at the scene of the crime.”
Unfortunately, it was pointed out that despite having a national-level forensic university within the state, many qualified forensic graduates remain under-utilised, while recruitment sometimes favours general science postgraduates. “This situation not only limits employment opportunities for forensic specialists but also affects the overall efficiency and scientific integrity of forensic investigations,” they said.
In this respect, they have written a letter to the Secretary, Home Department, Government of Goa, to consider giving first preference to MSc Forensic Science graduates for all forensic-related posts in the Goa FSL and other crime investigation units.
It was further requested to encourage the recruitment of trained NFSU Goa graduates to strengthen the scientific backbone of the state’s criminal justice system and to publicise this important consideration through reputed media platforms to raise awareness of the role and value of forensic experts in law enforcement.
“Such an initiative will not only promote scientific investigation standards in Goa but also provide rightful employment to the state’s own forensic talent pool,” they added.
