In a significant move, the Goa Police has taken a leap to adopt 'predictive policing' and entered into a deal with BITS Pilani, Goa to employ data analytics including use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology.
The two parties -- Goa Police and BITS Pilani, Goa -- exchanged a memorandum of understanding by which they would jointly research and get into projects employing AI, machine learning and other technologies to explore 'predictive policing'.
The MoU also covers collaboration in fighting cybercrime and also to create State-wide awareness on cyber issues.
Also on the table is conducting training programmes for the men-in-uniform right from the lower constabulary rung and up to the officers level in specified areas related to technology for crime detection.
Predictive policing involves usage of mathematics and analytic techniques like predictive analytics for enforcement and to identify likely criminal activity based on analysis of data related to past crimes to determine timing and areas for patrolling using algorithms.
Recently, the police department had also entered into a deal with a Belgaum based cyber-security firm to update its personnel in the specialised field.
