Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai prorogued the Goa legislative assembly from Wednesday.
The order was issued by Pillai on Wednesday under Article 174 (2a) of the Constitution of India and Legislature Secretary published it in the official gazette on Thursday for general information.
The Goa legislative assembly was adjourned sine die by Speaker Rajesh Patnekar on July 30 at the end of a 3-day monsoon session amidst a walkout by the Opposition and hurried transaction of listed business including passing of at least a dozen legislations.
One of these legislations, Goa Bhumiputra Adhikarni Bill, which seeks to bestow land title of houses occupied by people with atleast 30 years domicile in the State, has triggered a huge controversy prompting the government to do a climbdown and announce that it will be reconsidered in the Assembly.
Prorogation of the Assembly is a practice of ending the meetings without dissolving it. The Assembly is generally prorogued in the period between two sessions.
The current Goa legislative assembly is in the last year of its five-year term and elections to constitute the next State legislature are due in February-March next year.
