Guard caught smuggling drugs in jail

PANAJI

In yet another case of drug smuggling within Colvale Central Jail, the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) -- posted in the outer ring of the jail premises for security -- detained a security guard attached to the Goa Human Resource Development Corporation (GHRC) for allegedly sneaking in Ganja for a serial killer serving a life sentence.

This GHRC guard, identified as Shivram Naik, was caught red-handed as he attempted to smuggle the packet concealed in his shoes on Saturday.

Sources said he was apprehended during routine frisking at the entrance of the jail premises and was soon detained by the IRBian staff who questioned him till late hours.

Sources further said that the GHRC staff allegedly confessed that the drugs were meant for serial killer Chandrakant Talwar, a convict undergoing life sentence in a 2009 murder case. The source of the drugs is however not known. Subsequently, Assistant Jailor Mukund Gawas raided the cell where Talwar had been lodged and seized two mobile phones. Until Saturday evening, no complaint was filed with the Colvale police station.
