A Nigerian who was earlier arrested in an NDPS case is suspected to have died of drug overdose in Anjuna.
The deceased has been identified as Michael Nzube (33), a Nigerian national who was presently residing in Candolim.
Police informed that a local cabbie who was taking the Nigerian around in his car early Saturday morning suddenly noticed him getting violent.
The terrified cabbie stopped the car near a restaurant in Arpora in hope to secure some help at around 5.30 am.
Unable to control the Nigerian, the staff of the restaurant informed the police.
The arrival of police made the Nigerian more furious and he began attacking the restaurant staff and the cabbie.
According to police, the Nigerian picked up a danda and hit the driver, one of the restaurant staff and the owner of the restaurant. The violent Nigerian also smashed the car belonging to the cabbie.
Meanwhile, the police at the site requisitioned for more help from the Anjuna Police Station.
The Nigerian was finally overpowered and later admitted to the St Anthony Hospital, Anjuna.
The driver and the other staff escaped with some injuries, but the restaurant owner suffered a fracture, police said.
At around 11.30 am, Dr Jawaharlal Henriques of the St Anthony Hospital & Research Centre, Anjuna informed the Anjuna Police in writing that the Nigerian national who was admitted in his hospital has died of suspected drug overdose.
Police informed that in 2019 the deceased was arrested by Calangute Police with the possession of 36 gms of cocaine.
Police further informed that the deceased was released on February 2 this year.
A case has been booked against the deceased Nigerian for assault and threat under Section 326, 504, 506 (ii) and 427 of the IPC.
Anjuna Police have registered an unnatural death under Section 174 CrPC. The body will be sent for post mortem for further investigation.
