Even as the North Goa District Road Safety Committee held its first meeting at the North Goa Collectorate on Tuesday, several proposals were discussed including the introduction of numbering of KTC buses for the benefit of the tourists.Speaking to reporters after the conclusion of the meeting, member of the committee Roland Martins informed that the proposal of numbering of buses in KTC was discussed.
“We have taken up the issue with KTC to initially start with shuttle buses so that it benefits the tourists. Wide publicity is proposed to be given on the KTC website as well as the tourism department, collectorate and transport department websites,” Martins stated.
“Among the other proposals discussed included the need to fast track matters pertaining to installation of speed breakers, signages, zebra crossings. Also, a meeting will be held with helmet manufacturers on better implementation of ISI helmets and eliminate fake ones,” he informed.
“Further, it has been suggested that the 'No Entry to two-wheelers' boards should be installed way before the entrance to the Atal Setu bridge. Also, speed limit signages on Atal Setu will be taken up by GSIDC while on the approach roads on either side will be taken up by PWD,” Martins informed.
He then stated that the PWD has been asked to identify proper signages to be installed at the entrance to Panaji city.
“Near the Atal Setu, there is lots of criss-crossing, which confuses the tourist vehicles due to which proper signages are needed,” he said.
“A proposal was also mooted to approach the bar owners to make the 'don't drink and drive' initiative more effective,” Martins said and added that orientation sessions for road safety committees in the municipal councils of North Goa will also be taken up.
Additional Collector Sanjiv Gauns Dessai chaired the meeting.
