Verna police on Thursday arrested a 42-year-old man from Assam but residing at Upasnagar on charges of sexually assaulting a woman at Kesarval on February 12.
According to Police sources, Joyram Kalita, a labour contractor at Verna, had also threatened the victim with dire consequences if she informed anyone about the incident.
“The woman is a labourer and was staying in a rented room provided by the accused at Kesarval. The accused entered in the rented room of the victim when she was alone and had forcible sexual intercourse with her without her consent on February 12 and threatened her with dire consequences if she informed anyone about this act. The victim, however, registered a complaint at the Verna police station and an offence was registered,” said the source.
The accused has been arrested by Verna police under Sections 376, 506 (ii) of the IPC and PSI Vibha Volvoikar is carrying out further investigation under the supervision of PI Melson Colaco and guidance of Mormugao DySP Salim Shaikh.
