For once the babus were at the receiving end as a no-nonsense PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral on Monday reprimanded the government officials for failing to get their act together in completing public works.
Throughout the Janata Darbar, Cabral issued orders to officers directing them to complete works raised by the public within a time-frame and report to him with the action taken report.
Incidentally, the meeting also exposed the lethargic attitude of the government officials while taking up public works.
While a stern message needs to be passed to government officers, particularly inefficient ones, the PWD minister appeared a tad rude while interacting with some senior officers.
“Why did you not complete the work? If you cannot do the job then take voluntary retirement,” Cabral curtly told a senior PWD engineer.
In yet another barb directed to the Executive Engineer of WRD, he said: “You cannot make a farce by going for inspection. If the work does not come under the ambit of your department then write to the PWD.”
Later, while addressing the media at the end of the function, Cabral said that he did not vouch for the assurances given by the officers but assured to complete all works he promised to the people in Mapusa.
“In next one month 99 percent of the work which I have promised today will be resolved. However, the issue of water in Anjuna will be solved in one year’s time because we need time to construct the water treatment plant there,” he said.
“I will personally follow up the issues taken up today. I have the capacity to get work done,” he added.
