Lobo condemns arrest of Mevani

PANAJI

Leader of Opposition Michael Lobo on Monday criticised the arrest and re-arrest of Gujarat legislator Jignesh Mevani by the BJP-led government in Assam.

Addressing a press conference on Monday in the presence of GPCC president, Amit Patkar and senior leader Digambar Kamat condemned the arrest of Mewani and added that the Goa Congress fully will back him.

He said the party would be submitting a memorandum to the Goa Governor with regard to the arrest of Mevani and termed it an act of Nazism.

Mevani was picked up last week from his home in Gujarat by the Assam police after a BJP functionary from the North Eastern State had filed an FIR alleging that Mevani's tweet was critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and could potentially sow discord among sections of the population.

The Gujarat legislator got bail from an Assam court on Monday morning but he was soon rearrested on charges of “assaulting and outraging” the modesty of a woman police officer four days ago.
