GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar on Sunday said the true spirit of the 75th Independence Day celebration was to make Goa a safe state and give the women their freedom and independence, instead of blaming parents after a rape.
Amonkar who hoisted the flag at Baina on the occasion of Independence Day also said the people of Goa needed freedom from rising prices, rising crimes, rising incidents of rape and murder in the State.
Amonkar also slammed the government for having closed the case of a young 19-year-old woman found dead at Calangute Beach as a case of suicide without thorough investigation.
"People are today unsafe in their own locality and their own State. This is not the future that our ancestors and freedom fighters had fought for and today there is fear in the minds of people and the BJP government is responsible for this. People need freedom from the BJP government," said Amonkar.
"The chief minister should have worked on making the State safe for women instead of stating that parents are responsible for the safety of their children and that they must take care of their daughters.”
