'Manageable if govt institutions set up composting plants'

MARGAO

As there seemed no end to the process to identify and declare commercial establishments and housing societies as bulk waste generators, the Margao Municipal Council may have to face a question why the civic body has not brought in government departments and public canteens within the ambit of bulk waste generators?

The commercial capital plays host to a number of government institutions, including the SGPDA mega retail fish, vegetable, meat and fruit market and the wholesale fish market, besides the Sports department-owned Nehru stadium, district Collectorate, Ravindra Bhavan and the Power department and the canteen run in these premises, besides the Margao railway station run by the Konkan Railway Corporation just to name a few.

Sources in the know informed that even if these government institutions, along with city-based educational institutions, having space in their backyard, are told to set up composting or  small  bio-methanation units, it would go a long way in reducing the burden on the Margao Municipality in  the treatment of the waste. “If these government institutions are willing to set up the waste treatment composting plants in their backyards, the civic body should incentivize them to set up the mechanism”, remarked an official.

The official added: “Even if these institutions and the bulk waste generators manage the waste generated in their premises, it would go a long way in reducing the waste going to Sonsodo for disposal”.
