Officials treading cautious path hoping that politicians do not derail exercise

MARGAO

With the process of bringing the hotels and establishments under the category of bulk waste generators  reaching the stage of issuing notices and receiving replies from the owners, questions are being raised in the corridors of the civic body and outside whether the Municipal babus will receive a free hand from politicians and the powers that be to take the exercise to the logical conclusion.

With dozens of city’s hotels and restaurants identified in the category of bulk waste generators, sources say the officials are treading a cautious path, fearing that the entire process may come a cropper if the same does not find favour with the political class. “We only pray and hope the political class does not intervene and put spokes in the exercise. We have reached the stage wherein the civic body has issued notices and the hotels and restaurant owners have started sending their replies”, an official said.

He added: “We have received a reply from an owner denying that his establishment is generating 25 kilograms of waste per day. But, our supervisors had recently conducted an eight-day survey, wherein the waste collected from the establishments was weighed.  Based on these data, these establishments will be told to pay the fees as applicable for the bulk waste generators. We only hope that the entire process is not scuttled by vested interests”.
