A man from Mapusa fell for a fake online charity racket and was duped of around Rs 4.80 lakh.
Mapusa Police have booked an unknown person for dishonestly inducing and cheating the complainant.
According to police, the complainant Valeriano Almeida of Cunchelim, Mapusa befriended the accused on the popular social media platform “ Facebook.
The accused over a series of chats won over the confidence of the complainant and informed him that he was into charity and donated money to people in need and further promised to donate Rs 17 lakh to the complainant, police informed.
The accused first asked the complainant to pay Rs 1 lakh for the purpose of Income Tax. Next, he asked for another Rs 1 lakh for the purpose of FEMA.
In this way, the complainant deposited a total of Rs 4.80 lakh through NEFT by various transactions in the account of the accused, police said.
When the accused failed to deliver the promised Rs 17 lakh, the complainant got alerted and rushed to the police.
Police registered an offence against unknown persons under Section 406 and 420 of the IPC and Section 66-D of Information Technology Act. Mapusa Police are investigating further.
