Mentally unsound man allegedly desecrates cross

PANAJI
Panaji police on Thursday detained a 33-year-old man for allegedly desecrating a cross on the Altinho-Panaji slope.

The accused, identified as Aegustin Fernandes from Ribandar, was detained after an inquiry into a complaint lodged by the President of Confrarias Reunidas Da Igreja Immaculate Conception Church, Panaji, Pedrito Fernandes.

The complainant alleged that the incident could hurt religious harmony. An FIR under section 295 of the Indian Penal Code was registered.

However, due to indications of mental illness, the accused was referred to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) for treatment by the doctors at the Goa Medical College.
