Are the two Margao Municipal-owned markets, the Gandhi market and the New market free from encroachments?
Inspection of the two Municipal markets by Margao Municipal market committee headed by MMC Vice-Chairperson Deepali Sawal has unearthed a host of encroachments and extensions in the markets, more so in the Gandhi market.
The inspection was carried out by the Margao Market Committee headed by Deepali Sawal ahead of the first market committee scheduled on Friday.
Sources said the committee members headed by Deepali came across encroachments in the Gandhi market, besides the new market. The report is expected to be placed before the meeting on Friday.
Sources in the know pointed out that the MMC Chairperson Damu Shirodkar is also believed to have taken serious note of the encroachments in the markets. An intensive encroachment drive in the markets is not ruled out in the near future, especially with the much-awaited Christmas season nearly there.
The Market committee is meeting for the first time after the new Council headed by Damu Shirodkar assumed office more than a month ago. The first Council meeting chaired by the Municipal chairperson is now scheduled on December 5, which is expected to deliberate on the host of issues, including garbage and Sonsodo.
