MMC officials intercept wet waste violators at Arlem, fine them

MARGAO

With wet waste collected in the commercial capital showing a rise in the last few days, officials of the Margao Municipal Council were on a night vigil on Thursday, to intercept wet waste coming from the neighbouring village.

In fact, the MMC team led by Margao Municipal Engineer Deepak Desai started the drive on a positive note, as the team caught red handed around a dozen persons bringing wet waste in the city in the Fatorda area of the city at Arlem.

In fact, the MMC has imposed penalties amounting to Rs 5,000 on two major violators, who had brought hotel waste in gunny bags for disposal at Arlem. The Municipal engineer further disclosed that individuals, who brought small quantity of waste was let off with a penalty of Rs 500.

Saying that the latest drive has been undertaken with the wet waste generated in the city showing a rise in the last few days, Desai said “our assessment was that waste collection has increased in the last few days because of wet waste coming into the city from outside the city limits. What we had assessed has come true as the team have caught red handed a couple of persons on day one of the drive”.

Unlike the past, when the MMC had drafted the Municipal sanitary inspectors to maintain night vigil to keep the garbage violators at bay, the MMC has now constituted a much bigger team with the Municipal engineer descending on the ground to head the operation.

“Today is just the beginning. The team will make its presence felt at the dark spots where waste from outside the city limits is dumped  by unscrupulous elements. Maintaining vigil is just one way to keep the violators at bay”, Desai added.
