Outgoing Councillor and candidate in Ward 5 of the Mormugao Municipal Council elections Nilesh Navelkar has tested positive for Covid virus.
After his Ward 6 was reserved for OBC, Navelkar had decided to contest from Ward 5 and had been recently campaigning in the area.
Navelkar, who is part of the Mormugao Warriors panel backed by GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar, had recently stopped moving out for canvassing and this have led many to question his sudden absence.
When contacted, Navelkar told The Goan that he had tested positive for Covid virus.
"I had been getting a tremendous response from people of my ward, especially because I was instrumental in fighting against MMC’s move to increase house tax rates to pay salaries to MMC workers.”
“I had been moving around the ward campaigning with my supporters and meeting the people but a few days ago, I started developing symptoms like body ache.”
“While some said it could be because we were covering a large area walking, I decided not to take a risk and I got myself tested.”
“I have tested positive and decided not to move out though I am fit and fine. However, my supporters have been campaigning on my behalf and I am sure the people will understand my inability to meet them.”
“I urge all people who have met me recently to get themselves tested as well. I may not be seen around campaigning but my voters are with me and will get me elected," said Navelkar.
