VASCO
Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues on Monday kick-started a drive against the use of plastics in the port town."We have already seen the ban on plastic across India and accordingly, the MMC has also issued a public notice a month ago stating that plastic be banned in our jurisdiction.”
“We are kick-starting our drive today we will advise people to stop using PET bottles below 200 ml and use plastic that can be recycled beyond 20 per cent.”
“We have initiated fines during this drive and fines will start with Rs 200 for the first time and will increase up to Rs 5,000. We appeal to all shopkeepers to stop using plastic bags and discourage people from using plastic so that we can make Vasco plastic-free," said Rodrigues.
Newly elected MMC Market Committee President Vinod Kinlekar said the MMC will create awareness in the market and appraise shopkeepers about the anti-plastic drive initiated by the MMC.
"We will be forced to act on shopkeepers using plastic which is not permissible even after the awareness is done. We will not spare anyone, small or big shopkeepers, and we will begin our awareness drive on plastic ban on Tuesday," said Kinlekar.
Earlier in the day, the MMC chairperson convened a meeting with market inspectors, councillors, municipal staff and engineers to discuss on the drive against the use of plastics in Vasco.
