Asserting that the government has a plan to make the Mormugao Port a coal hub, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday said that track doubling of the South Western Railway track is being pursued to transport coal.
On the Uniform Civil Code, the South Goa MP offered no comments on the BJP government plans to introduce Uniform Civil code across the country.
Addressing the media, the MP also did not agree with newly appointed MPA Chairman N Vinodkumar that the MPA port should survive, saying ‘the Mormugao Port is not a new port, though the Chairman may be new to head the Port. So many Officials must have come and gone after heading the MPT. We also want the port to survive, but not by making the port a coal hub”.
On the losses suffered by farmers after their plantations were destroyed in the fires that swept the hills during the summer season, Sardinha said he has no idea whether the government has compensated the farmers, but hastened to add that the least the government can do for these farmers is supply them cashew and other fruit bearing trees free of cost.
Referring to the funds sanctioned to Goa amounting to Rs 386 crore, the South Goa MP demanded that the government spend the funds wisely for the betterment of the state to provide safe drinking water and provide sanitation.
On the UCC, Sardinha said Goa has an Uniform Civil Code given by the erstwhile Portuguese regime, adding “whether the UCC can be applied across the country or not depends on various situations. I don’t want to comment on the issue”.
The MP said many a road is in bad shape after the first showers, demanding that the government its eyes to undertake the repairs on priority to avert road accidents.
