In a significant step towards improving sanitation infrastructure, a new sewer line and pumping station project have been initiated in the Mestawada-Bhutebhat area of Vasco.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Tuesday launched the work of the project in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council MMC Chairperson Girish Borker and others.
The project, sanctioned at Rs 70 lakh, aims to provide sewer connections to all households, eliminating the health hazards posed by open sewer discharge.
Speaking to reporters, Salkar said the sewerage network had been a long-pending demand for over 25 years.
"The sewerage pipelines were laid 25 years ago, but a sewage pumping station was never built, which was a clear example of failed planning. We are now rectifying this by constructing two sewage pumping stations and laying new sewer lines, along with auxiliary works like road reinstatement," Salkar stated.
He further pointed out that Vasco lacks proper sewage connectivity, and his plan includes the construction of five pumping stations to address this issue.
"We are building two pumping stations in this area, along with one in Maimolem, with the support of Mormugao Comunidade. We have also acquired land from a family at one location, and the Dempo family has assured us land at Kharewaddo for another pumping station. Once these five pumping stations are in place, 70% of Vasco’s sewage connectivity will be completed," he added.
Emphasising the importance of proper sewage management, Salkar stated that open sewage discharge into drains and water bodies like Maimolem Lake poses severe environmental and health risks.
"In the next two years, we expect to complete 70-80% of the sewage network. We are also in the process of identifying land for a sewage pumping station at New Vaddem, which will help us achieve 100% sewage connectivity," he said.
Salkar expressed gratitude to the Ashish Borker family for voluntarily providing land for the project.
