MARGAO

Coal dust pollution took the centre stage at the gram sabha of the Nuvem village panchayat on Sunday.

At the meeting chaired by Sarpanch Freda D’Sa, gram sabha members led by Jose Roque Andrade pointed out that coal which is transported by Railway wagons passing though Nuvem (Murda- Pequeno), is not only creating  pollution in Mormugao-Vasco but also along the railway line through Nuvem.

He requested the Chair that the  Panchayat should write to Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) and Railways  (RVNL), with respect to the increase in coal dust in the ward of Murda-Pequeno.

Andrade said the coal particles spread over whole Nuvem as  the wind blows west to east and it should be stopped as it causes health risk like respiratory issues/cancers.

The meeting also discussed on the need to make a budgetary provision for installation of CCTV surveillance cameras at the garbage hot spots and to keep anti-social elements at bay.

As part of the discussions, the Gram Sabha members requested the Sarpanch to install CCTV cameras in locations where anti-social elements gather and also Garbage is thrown. A member also requested that a dry run to install CCTV cameras should be conducted, at the required hot spots.

Members also requested the Chair to increase the budgetary allocation for garbage management.

The gram sabha gave its approval for the budget estimated for the financial year 2024-25 after discussions.

While the total receipts were pegged at Rs. 65621327, the estimates projected expenditure amounting to Rs 62755000, a surplus budget of Rs.2866327.
