Congress leaders in Goa seized the opportunity provided by a Gandhi Jayanti ceremony at the party headquarters to train their guns on the BJP over the atrocity in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh in which a 19-year-old Dalit woman was raped and murdered.
Former Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro was first off the blocks saying the Mahatma would have launched against the NDA government at the Centre an agitation bigger than any he led against the British.
The BJP-led government in UP he said, was trying to hush up the Hathras case by "destroying evidence" and cremating the victim's body hurriedly.
Faleiro also called for introspection on the relevance of 'non-violence' and 'satyagraha', two of the most potent agitational approaches successfully adopted by Mahatma Gandhi against the British.
Faleiro also hit out at the UP government for using force against Rahul Gandhi and his arrest while en route to the victim's village to meet her family.
