After an early-season deficit, Goa has now received steady showers and will continue to experience ‘normal to above normal rainfall’ through September, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The State has already been placed under an Orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall on September 3 with heavy rainfall expected till September 6.
The forecast aligns with the national outlook, as the IMD has forecast that the monthly average rainfall over India in September 2025 will be ‘above normal’, exceeding 109 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA).
“Most parts of the country are likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall. However, some parts of Northeast and East India, many areas of extreme South Peninsular India and some pockets of northernmost India are likely to record below-normal rainfall,” the IMD statement said. The monsoon graph indicates normal to above normal rainfall for Goa.
In its monthly update, the IMD said maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal in many regions of west-central, northwest and southern India. By contrast, they are likely to stay above normal in parts of east-central, east and northeast India, as well as parts of the western coast.
IMD Goa added that a fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal around September 2, which may further enhance rainfall activity in the State.
While the projection of above-normal rainfall has brought optimism for agriculture and water resources, the IMD has also underlined associated risks. Heavy and prolonged showers could trigger flooding, landslides, surface transport disruptions, public health concerns and ecological damage. "Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions," reads the advisory.
Amid ‘active’ south-west monsoon, Goa has received close to 7 per cent surplus rainfall as on September 1.
